The Death of Joy

Mark Twain said, "Comparison is the death of joy."

I say comparing is advertising’s evil ploy

What's my competition doing, where are they going?

These questions paralyze, they keep my uniqueness from showing

I don't need to be you, you don't want to be me

Yet alone on an island is a hard place to be

But it's there I learn to survive, I discover my strengths

When I'm true to myself, I'll endure to great lengths

So busy comparing I forget how to live

I lose my uniqueness and have nothing to give

Blind to your beauty, can't see your life shine

But there's no one so brilliant, You’re one of a kind

I need new vision, I need new sight

The darkness of comparing, come into the light

Jealousy's weight crushes the rising sun

It's said, "Everything's comprehended in comparison"

They tell you to be you, while they shape you with their mold

To be fully you, it’s a threat to religion, truth be told

Be you, as long as you do what they say

Be you, inside their box, or they'll be a price to pay

Everyday you must believe, you are the only one to offer

Painting your perfect picture while ignoring the jealous scoffer

The world needs you badly, it won't be the same

Without your glory, your joy, your name

Comparing leads to discontent

Comparing, wisdom in a fragile tent

So be you, be great, step out, no apology

Let the joy of your unique contribution be your legacy
